Welcome to the latest edition of the Magrathea Newsletter, combining news from Magrathea and around the industry.

IP Migration and life after the PSTN

As touched upon last month we are starting to see increasing noise about the PSTN switch off, which is most welcome as awareness has been worryingly low.  We have recently published an article you can see here https://www.magrathea-telecom.co.uk/life-after-the-pstn/

If you would like to discuss the implications of the PSTN switch off and what opportunities that opens up for you as a voice provider, please do get in touch.

Gaining Party Led Switching & Porting

Again we mentioned this last month but consider it worth repeating.  The remaining regulations to be implemented from the European Electronic Communications Code (EECC) come into force in May this year.

Our article (here https://www.magrathea-telecom.co.uk/final-batch-of-eecc-regulatory-changes/) serves as a reminder of what you need to do and clients can download from our website our guidance for voice providers where we include more details.

EU calling tariff

It has been the case for some time now that some European destinations have been charging higher rates for ingressing traffic that originates outside of Europe. Each of these countries is only required by regulation to cap prices for calls originating inside the EEA, therefore many of them have chosen to set different rates for calls originating outside the EEA.

Many of the networks that carry traffic to these destinations are unable to differentiate between calls originated within or outside the EEA and therefore they set their prices for the worst-case scenario and we end up paying the non-EEA rate for all calls, meaning our standard tariffs have to increase.

If you are not already using our EU CLI tariff, this is a separate tariff where, if the caller IDs that you are sending on calls are European caller IDs, you will be able to call surcharged destinations for ‘within EEA’ rates – i.e. without the surcharge. This is great news as it is making us very competitive again on these destinations!

For more information including rates on this tariff, please drop the team an email at support@magrathea-telecom.co.uk and we can get you started on this tariff very quickly. The tariff uses our same high-quality routes and so the only difference you will see is to the pricing.

Channel Live 2023

Tracey Wright, our MD, will be taking part in a panel session at Channel Live this month.  She will be discussing all things VoIP and how Service Providers can create the services their customers need.  The event itself is over two days (29th and 30th March) and tickets are free!

What’s on our minds…

We checked in with the support team to see what’s keeping them busy at the moment and they shared that migrating our clients to the system which produces encrypted CDRs for download is their key project for this month.

We have been steadily moving people across for a few months now but a final push will hopefully see all clients off the old system by the end of March.   If you have been contacted by the team please do send confirmation that you are happy with the changes, it will really lighten their load!

As well as including more useful data in the files this is also a much more secure mechanism for collecting your data.

As always here at Magrathea we appreciate your comments and feedback, if there is anything you would like to contact us about, or you would like to opt out of receiving future newsletters, please email info@magrathea-telecom.co.uk
