The UK Fraud Strategy – what it means for telecoms providers

Fraud now accounts for around 45% of reported crime in the UK, costing the economy an estimated £14.4bn each year.

The Government’s latest Fraud Strategy sets out a clear direction – and signals rising expectations for telecoms providers. So, what does that mean for you?

Greater emphasis on data sharing. Increased focus on identifying suspicious traffic. And a clear commitment to deliver a national telecommunications traceback scheme.

Explore what’s changing, what it means for your services, and the practical steps you can take now to stay ahead. Read more here.

Ofcom: Call termination review – what it means for service providers

Ofcom has also now published its final statement on the Review of Call Termination Markets and End-to-End Connectivity Conditions – setting the regulatory direction for the next five years. At a headline level, it brings continuity in some areas (ongoing regulation of call termination and pricing controls), while introducing changes that could shift how service providers interconnect and compete.

But what does that actually mean in practice – especially for service providers operating in an increasingly complex and competitive voice market?  We have written an article, breaking down the key

Home Office: Economic Crime Information Sharing

A quieter month for new consultations but a welcome opportunity to work on responses for everything we have covered in the last couple of months.  You can revisit them here.

Meanwhile we have contributed to this Home Office call for evidence (see here), which is due on the 18th, via our CCUK membership.  We have long believed that appropriate and timely data sharing between public and private organisations is one of the fundamental requirements in the fight against fraud.

This call for evidence sums up nicely the concerns we have flagged in the past, including legal or regulatory complexity, the lack of a single organisation with responsibility for this area and the lack of an accessible consistent mechanism for exchanging data.

We are expressing support for regulation that supports information sharing as well as supporting innovation that can help to detect and prevent fraud.  It is clear that fraudsters have access to all the technology without all the rules, we need the rules to allow us to fight back.

This call for evidence ties in with the wider pieces of work the Home Office are looking at around traceback and the recently announced Online Crime Centre, all interesting projects that we will keep you updated on as they progress.

Magrathea network improvements update

Our longstanding clients will know, we are almost always going through updates and upgrades to ensure our network remains robust and up to standard.  This last few months have been particularly busy for our team as we embark on some significant improvements to future proof certain areas of our network.  Not only are these necessary from a network resilience point of view, but we are also involving more team members to ensure our human resilience is up to scratch in all critical areas too.

We aim to be transparent whenever we carry out work on our network or client-facing services that has any possibility of impact, however remote, and as a result you may have seen more updates than usual in your technical inbox so far this year.

All work is carefully scheduled to minimise any potential impact, and we’re pleased to report that year-to-date we have had no reports of disruption during these ‘at risk’ periods.

Further work is planned over the coming months, and we will continue to keep you informed on the detail with any potential impact.

Service Spotlight: Secure RTP

Magrathea’s Secure RTP service helps protect both signalling and voice traffic from interception. By using TLS to secure SIP signalling and SRTP to encrypt call media, it ensures calls are delivered to your network with enhanced security and integrity.

Designed to give you greater confidence and peace of mind, it’s a straightforward way to strengthen the security of your voice services. For more information, please contact our team.

Service Spotlight: MagSIPConnect

Our MagSIPConnect service enables clients using cloud communications platforms to access our network without the need for a Session Border Controller (SBC).

We already have some major names setup, meaning adding new clients takes just moments.  Just provide us with your unique SIP header and we can do the rest.  As the list is always being updated, contact us to find out if your chosen provider is already supported.

You can read a bit more about MagSIPConnect in our previous article here and if you are interested in finding out more or require any specific features as part of this service, please do contact our team.

Yeastar Certified Provider

Yeastar have included Magrathea in their certified provider list, meaning any mutual clients can setup their SIP accounts quickly and simply knowing that full integration testing has already been carried out.

Events and Outings

Fraud remains one of the biggest challenges facing our industry, so it was valuable to attend the Comms Council UK Fraud Summit 2026 alongside peers, regulators and enforcement bodies.

Discussions centred on how fraud is becoming more coordinated and international, and how the industry needs to respond in kind – through better intelligence sharing, practical tools like traceback, and closer collaboration across the ecosystem.

Encouragingly, there is real momentum behind turning strategy into action – something we’re continuing to support through our work across industry groups.

May is a busy month for us, starting with the CCUK Workshop ‘Telecoms compliance in practice’ taking place on the 12th at Gamma’s offices in London, where Laura and Tracey are speaking. This is free to attend for all CCUK members, and full details can be found here.

Still with CCUK, the next Women in Telecoms (WiT) face to face event takes place on the 19th at 8×8’s offices and is always a great opportunity to network and listen to what is always an insightful panel session. More information can be found here.

Tracey has also been invited to speak on fraud at the Nextaxis Inspiration Day 2026 on the 20th  May, contributing to industry discussions on how we continue to strengthen collaboration and tackle telecoms fraud in the UK.

Magrathea Musings

As many clients know, we offer fibre and SOGEA services through favourable commercial terms negotiated with BT Wholesale. While this isn’t a core product area for us, it enables clients to access competitive connectivity alongside our voice services.

Unlike our in-house platforms – where we design and manage the service end-to-end – delivery here relies on third-party suppliers. We understand that fibre installations can sometimes be frustrating and while we do everything we can to support a smooth process, there are many variables outside our direct control. So, our top tips – from experience – are the best outcomes tend to come from providing as much detail as possible at the point of order, and ensuring a site contact is available to work with engineers during installation.

If you’re planning an order or would like to talk through requirements in advance, our team is always happy to help guide you through the process.

Kind regards

Client Support, Magrathea
