Closing the mobile CLI spoofing loophole: has Ofcom got it right?

Ofcom has confirmed new measures intended to prevent fraudsters overseas from presenting UK mobile numbers to make scam calls appear more trustworthy. By 15 July 2027, overseas calls displaying a UK +447 number will need to have the caller ID withheld unless the call is carried on a route that verifies genuine roaming.

Ofcom has dropped the more complex ‘restore’ element of its original proposal following concerns raised by Magrathea and others, but questions remain about the impact on legitimate calls and whether the measure fully closes the loophole.

In our latest article, we examine what the decision means for providers and consumers, how Magrathea will approach implementation, and why effective traceback and consumer education remain essential.

Account Authentication

While Ofcom’s new measures focus on preventing the misuse of UK mobile caller IDs, protecting individual accounts from unauthorised use remains equally important.

As highlighted in our July newsletter, we recommend using either IP authentication or digest authentication for SIP-originated calls, rather than relying on a username and password alone.

If you have not yet reviewed your account authentication method, please contact our Support team, who will be happy to discuss the most appropriate option with you.

Service Spotlight

Integrate our status updates with your systems

You asked for an easier way to integrate our service updates into your own systems, and following feedback from our recent client survey, we’ve introduced a machine-readable status feed.

Clients can now retrieve Magrathea’s service status updates in JSON format and incorporate them into monitoring dashboards, service desk platforms or other internal systems.

By checking the feed automatically, technical and support teams can identify new updates without needing to monitor a separate webpage manually, helping them stay informed and respond more quickly when an issue is reported.

Number re-hosting

Changes in the market or regulations can be a useful prompt to review whether your current network arrangements continue to offer the flexibility and support your business needs.

Did you know that if you are an Ofcom range holder, it may be possible to move your existing number ranges to a new host network?

Magrathea can re-host number ranges that are already built on another network. We will manage the data build and testing process, confirm the onward routing of your numbers and ensure that existing ported numbers continue to be honoured, while keeping you informed throughout.

The full process usually takes approximately three months, so advance planning is important. You will need to provide the relevant Ofcom certificates, a letter of authority, your current operator’s routing-plan cease reference and the required routing information.

If you are considering re-hosting your number ranges, please get in touch and we can talk you through the process.

Magrathea Musings

0x19 Years and Counting

Our 25th anniversary has given us an opportunity to reflect on how much Magrathea, and the wider telecoms industry, has changed. Much of that progress happens quietly behind the scenes, through systems being developed, technology being thoroughly tested and people contributing to industry standards over many years.

Our Tech Director Martyn recently shared his perspective on that journey, from early virtualisation experiments and rather enthusiastic network alerts to his long-running work with NICC on emergency communications, number portability, CLI, fraud and security.

It is an entertaining glimpse into some of the technical work that has shaped Magrathea and the industry around us. And, for anyone who is unsure, 0x19 is 25 in hexadecimal.
