This month we’re catching up with Vahed, a Developer and member of our highly skilled dev team.
Working behind the scenes, the team helps to develop and improve the systems and features that support both our colleagues and clients.
We took a moment to chat with Vahed about his role, what he enjoys about working in development and how he spends his time outside work.
Vahed, can you tell us a little about your role at Magrathea?
I’m a Developer at Magrathea, where I work on a range of projects, from developing new features to fixing bugs and improving existing systems. Every day can be quite different, which I enjoy, and there’s always something new to learn or a problem to solve.
Which aspects of your job do you enjoy most?
I probably get the most satisfaction from solving problems that initially seem difficult or confusing. Once you finally understand what is causing an issue and find a good solution, it’s a great feeling.
How has your role or career evolved during your time here?
My role has evolved quite a lot during my time at Magrathea. I’ve gradually taken on more responsibility and become more involved in understanding the wider systems rather than just focusing on individual pieces of code. I’ve also had the opportunity to work with different technologies and projects, which has helped me develop both my technical skills and my understanding of the business. Looking back, I think one of the biggest changes has been becoming more confident in tackling unfamiliar problems independently.
In your view, what skills do you think are most important for a Developer?
Technology changes so quickly that you can’t know everything, so being willing to investigate, ask questions and learn is really important. I’d also say sometimes patience is important to find the right solution. Good communication is important too, because development is rarely just about writing code; you need to understand what people actually need and be able to explain your ideas to others.
What’s the best piece of advice you have ever been given?
“Don’t be afraid to ask questions.” I think it’s easy to feel that you’re expected to know everything, especially when you’re working with unfamiliar technology, but asking questions is often the quickest way to learn something properly.
And finally, how do you enjoy spending time outside of work?
I usually spend time with my family, and whenever I have the time and feel energetic, I go to the gym.
