National Dog Day – reflections from Dash, Interim Director of Office Refurbishment

Posted on: 26th August 2026, by Magrathea

For National Dog Day, we’ve once again handed over the keyboard, briefly, to Dash, Magrathea’s Chief Pawsitivity Officer.

Following the overwhelming success of his previous updates (according to Dash), he recently accepted a temporary promotion to Director of Office Refurbishment. After all, someone had to make sure the humans didn’t make a complete mess of it…

Reflections from Dash

Hello again, loyal readers, admirers and those of you carrying snacks.

As you may have heard, the office has recently been refurbished. What you may not know is that the entire project took place under my close personal supervision. Left to their own devices, the humans would simply have moved some furniture around and called it progress.

Naturally, I stepped in.

From the moment the first contractors arrived, I made my presence known.

  • Every delivery was personally greeted.
  • Every box was thoroughly investigated.
  • Every new chair underwent rigorous nap testing.

You’re welcome.

While the humans discussed layouts, lighting and “collaborative spaces”, I focused on the things that actually mattered:

  • Ensuring every visitor acknowledged me appropriately.
  • Identifying which contractors looked most likely to share snacks.
  • Confirming that the new chairs met my exacting lounging standards.
  • Making sure nobody carried anything across the office without stepping over me first.

It’s called leadership.

There were, of course, some challenges.

The humans developed an irritating habit of trying to work in the exact places I had chosen for supervision. Several times, I was asked to “just move for a second”.

I declined.

Health and safety also fell under my remit. Throughout the project, I carried out regular risk assessments, paying particular attention to:

  • Unattended lunches.
  • Open doors leading to unauthorised adventures.
  • Suspicious ladder activity.
  • Cardboard boxes requiring immediate occupation.

I’m pleased to report that disaster was avoided.

Another important responsibility involved identifying the optimum afternoon nap location. This required extensive testing across multiple workstations.

Science cannot be rushed.

I’m pleased to confirm that several locations exceeded expectations.

Overall, the refurbishment has been a great success. The humans seem delighted with their brighter workspace, improved meeting areas and shiny new furniture. Morale is high, productivity has reportedly increased and everyone appears much happier.

Although, if we’re being honest, that’s probably because I’m still coming into the office.

Now that my refurbishment duties are complete, normal service has resumed:

  • Visitor greetings remain first class.
  • Kitchen supervision continues.
  • Wellbeing support is available whenever somebody needs a fuss.

And yes, I’m still conducting regular inspections of the biscuit situation.

As National Dog Day reminds us, dogs contribute in all sorts of incredible ways. Some work alongside the emergency services. Some provide life-changing assistance and companionship.

Others…

…hold an office together through strategic naps, unwavering morale support and an uncanny ability to appear exactly where everyone needs to walk.

It’s a heavy burden.

Now, if you’ll excuse me, I need to inspect the new chairs again. They may have changed since this morning. Quality control never sleeps.

Well… except when I do.
