International Mentoring Day 2025

Posted on: 17th January 2025, by Magrathea

Each year on January 17th, the world celebrates International Mentoring Day— chosen because it coincides with the birthday of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., a man who spent his life mentoring and uplifting others. His legacy of wisdom and leadership embodies what mentoring is all about: helping others rise to their full potential.

Mentoring is not just about guidance; it’s about connection, inspiration, and making a lasting impact. It helps not only the mentee, but also the mentor in positive ways.  Whether it’s sharing career advice, teaching life skills, or just being a listening ear, mentoring has the power to shape lives and build bridges across generations.

We are lucky in Magrathea to have some incredible role models and mentors, who happily give their time to encourage others to grow. Some give their time to work with young people to help them grow in confidence, others work closely with regulators and trade bodies to ensure that everyone is represented and has a voice as our industry grows and changes at pace. One particular person – who we mentioned in our Employee Spotlight yesterday (see here) – is Solomon  who is part of the UK Telecoms Innovation Network (UKTIN) Ambassador program, using his time to help and encourage other young people get started in the world of telecoms. You can see more about UKTIN & Solomon here.

It wouldn’t however be a Magrathea post, if we didn’t mention our furry friends! So, to wrap up, here is a fun fact. Mentoring isn’t just for people—animals do it too! Wolves mentor their young in hunting and pack dynamics, teaching them survival skills. We knew the ancestors of our MagDogs were special!

So, let’s take a moment to celebrate the mentors and mentees in our lives – and how simple acts of support and encouragement can make a huge difference.
