This month we caught up with Solomon – who is a Junior Systems Administrator here at Magrathea. He is responsible for the day to day maintenance of our internal office hardware and software, assisting with datacentre work and supporting our technical team. We wanted to know a bit more about what he does and find out a little bit more about him…
Solomon – we last caught up with you a couple of years ago a few months after you joined. Can you tell us a bit about what you do?
My role involves the day-to-day maintenance of our office-based equipment (Both Hardware and Software), maintaining physical and wireless network servers, routers, switches, cables, and any other technical equipment we use. Likewise, as a Junior System Administrator, my job role consists of helping and assisting the wider non-technical team with any technical queries and questions. I also assist the technical team with network management, monitoring, and our datacentre work, ensuring seamless data transmission and efficient network performance, which are essential for the company to function and communicate.
That sounds very varied! What do you enjoy most about working at Magrathea?
What I enjoy most about my role is the fact that I have the chance to play with and study various equipment (Hardware & Software). Secondly, the opportunity for learning, development and support from colleagues. Lastly working as part of a team, where I feel valued and work towards a goal for example making history and achieving milestones for the company.
And what do you least enjoy?
Least enjoy – I love my job and there is currently nothing that I least enjoy about it. I strive to learn something new from every experience and aim to continuously improve my knowledge and skills in my job role.
What are the most significant changes in the time you have been here?
For me the most significant changes, would have to be being involved in some of the background tasks i.e. Learning how to deploy new upgraded equipment in the office.
Alongside what you are doing within Magrathea, you are also involved in mentoring others. Can you tell us a little bit about that and your motivation for doing it?
I have been involved in Talks at Reading college and recently joined the UK Telecoms Innovation Network (UKTIN) as Young Ambassador (see here). My role, as an ambassador involves putting awareness on what I do as a Junior Systems Administrator – sharing my experience, qualification, knowledge, in a positive light and providing an insight to other young adults and students; who want to pursue a career in Connectivity and Network Engineering. Motivation wise – it was a pleasure to be given the opportunity to discuss my experience at Reading college which increased my motivation in learning more skills and strengthening those I already possess. Further, giving back to the community my shared experience.
That is a brilliant thing to be involved in – and something I am sure the students will benefit from. So finally, how else do you enjoy spending time outside of work?
My hobbies outside of work are varied, but I mostly enjoy travelling up, down, in and out of the country, spending quality time with family, playing and watching football with friends and family.
Solomon, you sound like you have a very full diary – and I know that we also benefit from your knowledge and enthusiasm in the office! Thank you for taking the time to let us learn a bit more about you.
