Celebrating International Men’s Day

Posted on: 19th November 2024, by Magrathea

Magrathea currently boasts a 50/50 gender split, so it goes without saying that the men in our organisation are equally as important to us as the women and that’s why we want to mark this International Men’s Day and celebrate all the great men that we work alongside.

This year’s IMD theme is ‘Positive male role models’ and we believe we have an abundance of those in our organisation.  One of which is featured in our team profile this month, have a read about Tom and the work he does with the local Scouts group in order to support his son and daughter to have access to equal opportunities for fun and learning.

Not only are the men on our team respectful, supportive and of course brilliant at their jobs, they portray the very best traits we can hope for to role model the next generation in the workplace.

One of the ways that is apparent is when they call out behaviours that might negatively impact their colleagues, we all have inherent biases and sometimes don’t catch ourselves, but our whole team are empowered to keep each other in check.  This might be something as apparently innocuous as being fair about who makes the tea, but these little acts all add up to a culture of equality and equity.

Positive role modelling also means when our team are working alongside colleagues both within our business or out with clients, in datacentres and events, they treat others with respect and dignity.  We have observed on a number of occasions members of our team stepping in to make others feel safe or to highlight misogynistic behaviours, but always in suitably professional and positive way.

This kind of role modelling, through everyday attitude and behaviours, is achievable for all and must be more widely accepted as the way to be man.  The days of displaying aggressive masculinity or needing to strut an oversized ego around a meeting room have no place in the modern business world.

Many will know that Tracey Wright, our MD, has helped establish a women specific telecoms group and a small number of people question if this is discriminatory to men (a whole separate article will be written on that!) but we spotted this recent LinkedIn post by Lee Chambers which sums up that this is not a them versus us situation.  The key here is a simple shift from ‘but’ to ‘and’.

So on this International Men’s Day,  we want to celebrate all of the wonderful men that work here at Magrathea and all of the positive male role models out there in the world – keep doing what you are doing!
