Empowering the Next Generation: Celebrating International Girls in ICT Day

Posted on: 24th April 2025, by Magrathea

📅 Every year, on the fourth Thursday of April, we celebrate International Girls in ICT Day – a global initiative led by the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) to inspire and empower girls and young women to pursue careers in information and communication technologies (ICT). The theme this year is ‘Girls in ICT for inclusive digital transformation’, and its message is more vital than ever.

At Magrathea, we believe that the future of telecoms – and technology as a whole – is stronger, more innovative, and more inclusive when everyone has a seat at the table. We work hard within our company (and through associations like Comms Council UK) to encourage more girls and young women to explore careers in information and communication technologies.

Despite the ever-growing role of technology in our daily lives, women and girls are still underrepresented in ICT fields. This isn’t due to a lack of talent or ambition – it’s often the result of limited access, outdated stereotypes, and a lack of visible role models.

International Girls in ICT Day shines a spotlight on these challenges – but also celebrates the achievements of women who are breaking new ground in tech. It calls on governments, industry, educators, and communities to create inclusive environments where girls feel encouraged and empowered to explore and thrive in the world of ICT – letting girls know that the tech world is theirs to shape.

We’re proud to work in an industry that never stops evolving, and enjoy getting involved to mentor girls to become the engineers, developers, network specialists, and digital innovators of tomorrow. After all, the next big leap in telecoms could come from a girl who just needs someone to awake her passion and guide her! 👩💻
