On this day in 1938, The War of the Worlds radio broadcast took listeners on a journey so vivid, many believed it was real and Martians had invaded Earth! It’s a perfect reminder of the power of sound – how words, tone, and imagination can build worlds far beyond what we see.
World Audio Drama Day celebrates that creative force. Long before podcasts and streaming, audio drama connected people through shared stories that unfolded entirely in the mind’s eye – stories that relied on one of our oldest and most universal tools: the voice.
Few productions have captured that spirit better than the very one our company was named from – The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy – which began life not on television or in print, but on the radio, blending humour and sci-fi into something unforgettable. It proved that even in the vastness of the universe, a good story (and a towel) are all you really need to transport you into another place.
So today, we celebrate the art of storytelling through sound – where imagination does the seeing and voice does the connecting. From The War of the Worlds to The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy, audio drama has taken us on journeys across galaxies, into adventures that remind us just how limitless imagination can be – and how much we can do with the simple power of voice.
