June staff profile – Michael

Posted on: 18th June 2024, by Magrathea

For this month we’ve caught up with Michael.  Many of our clients will have spoken with him in his porting role but he has recently had a change in responsibilities, so we’re interested to hear how things are going…

What do you enjoy about working here?

I think for me the thing I enjoy most is the more personal touch that the company seeks to offer everyone here. I started working here when I was 20 and it’s now been close to 10 years, the number of employees has increased substantially but at no point have I ever been made to feel like “just a number” as is so often the case at other offices. They very much go out of their way at Magrathea to make you feel like you are a part of the company as a whole, and to be able to see the difference you are making in the day to day operations. It’s a very motivational thing I find to be able to sit down and genuinely feel like you matter. Not to mention the huge amount of support everyone here is always willing to offer you in other aspects of life if you ever feel like you need it.

What are the biggest changes you’ve seen since you first joined Magrathea?

The biggest changes I’ve seen have probably been the shift in adaptability over the last few years. They have always been very good here at being ahead of the curve in terms of solutions and forward-thinking technology. Often you see as companies expand the ability to make quick and efficient decisions can stagnate, but the workflow and processes here have always been changed and adapted as the team has grown to make sure we are still able to continuously be proactive in delivering what we feel we need and want.

You’ve recently changed roles, what is your new role?

Yes I did! “Business Analyst” is my official title, and I am currently more heavily focussed on working directly with the Development Team and Porting Team to oversee and implement new processes and automated systems to increase efficiency in what is an already very busy team! That is half of it anyway, as I split my time between that and also beginning to learn coding as more long term I wish to pursue a more development-based role which is something I’ve always been highly interested in and have been given the opportunity to now learn!

What do you think are the biggest challenges facing telecoms at the moment?

To be honest I feel like the challenges that are faced have often long been the same, just dressed up differently. I feel at times the regulatory body can often make requests, new rules, or changes, without forward thinking the resources and requirements that then puts on the industry as a whole. Ironically it can often be due to a lack of proper communications, but I expect that is an issue faced in most industries that have an overseeing regulatory body. Not to say that these changes and rules aren’t for the general benefit of everyone as I believe they are, but perhaps a little more nuance could be useful at times.

And finally, how do you enjoy spending time outside of work?

No outrageous hobbies I’m afraid. I am fairly committed to the gym and train a lot, but that has always been something I just do for enjoyment I don’t do it to compete. Any other free time I mostly spent with friends, or just chill out playing a few video games. I don’t know if I would say I enjoy the process but I am also quite heavily tattooed – it’s always been something I was super interested in when I was young so as soon as I turned 18 I started “collecting body art” you could call it!
