Gaining Provider Led Switching & Porting – are you ready?

Posted on: 3rd August 2023, by Magrathea

We are including a reminder in every newsletter this year but want to take another opportunity to remind all retailers that they must comply with the new GPL rules which came into effect earlier this year. Progress is now visible with introducing One Touch Switching, and pricing about to be set, so for anyone that’s been pushing this down the list of priorities so far we encourage you to take an interest at this stage.

Please remember that it is the responsibility of the party dealing with the end user to comply – please make sure everyone in your value chain is up to speed with their obligations!

The One Touch Switching Company (TOTSCO) have recently started onboarding retailers with residential customers, and have circulated indicative pricing.  We recommend checking their website for details on what to do.

You have until 11th August to feedback your thoughts on the proposed pricing structure, the bulletin can be found here.

It is also worth noting that there are a number of third parties working to bring a managed solutions to the market that will simplify the management of this process for smaller retails.  Details can be found on the TOTSCO website.

The business group is still working on finalising the industry process, keep watching here for updates.

Remember, it’s not just GPL that came into force

Although probably the biggest challenge is getting everything to a GPL process, we mustn’t forget all the other rules too, these can be summarised as follows:

  • Continuity of service must be provided during migration;
  • Time and date of switch must be agreed and adhered to;
  • Information about the switch must be easily available;
  • Consent must be given and recorded;
  • Compensation must be made available in the event of problems;
  • Number porting must be available to those that request it;
  • Number portability must be supported for a minimum of one month after the date the service is terminated by the customer, unless expressly agreed otherwise on termination of service;
  • No direct charges may be applied to the customer for number portability;
  • Splitting of number blocks for portability must be allowed where technically possible;
  • The process must be gaining provider led.

If you would like to chat through how these rules impact you and the service you provide please do get in touch with us on 0345 004 0040 or email support@magrathea-telecom.co.uk.
