Saying goodbye to the TDM after a quarter of a century together
After a quarter of a century together, it’s almost time to close the chapter on TDM. As we prepare to finally say a fond farewell, we have been reflecting on the technology that has taken us from then to present times, plus some of our own milestones over the past 25 years. This is especially poignant as we have entered our 25th year as a carrier network! This article shares our thoughts and musings.
Closing the CLI spoofing loophole – our thoughts
We have now had chance to fully reflect on this consultation and in our opinion the proposed way forward doesn’t address the issue in full and potentially could end up doing more harm than good from an end-user perspective. Please have a look at our latest article to fully understand the context of the proposed way forward and why we feel it falls short.
We will be responding to the consultation shortly so we welcome any comments or feedback from interested clients.
Service Spotlight: Account Authentication methods
For SIP originated calls, we offer three secure ways for your traffic to be authenticated:
- Registration via username and password
- Pre-authorised IP address
- Digest authentication – which is a combination of methods 1 & 2.
With digest authentication your username and password registration can have an IP mask applied to it, so that our servers recognise which account you are using but only allow traffic using that username if the IP address is one that has been pre-registered.
As well as offering an additional layer of security, it will also mean that you can use the same IP for authentication on two different accounts – for example when using a standard account and a gold account simultaneously.
We advise that clients use either IP authentication or digest authentication for greater security. If you are still using username and password alone, we recommend you review this with our team.
If you would like to know more about methods of authentication, please contact support@magrathea-telecom.co.uk
Service Spotlight: Restricted Tariff Options
Our Restricted Tariff options offer you the ability to limit the destinations that can be dialed through your outgoing calling account. There are two options to limit the destinations you can dial by pence per minute on both the standard and gold route plans – you can choose either 3p per minute or 15p per minute as a restriction.
These changes can be made via our Client Portal or RestAPI, if you are not already using one of these tools or you cannot see the new feature down the left-hand side of your Client Portal home screen, please contact us on and we can very quickly arrange for you to have access to these tools, or to adjust your level of access so that you can use this feature.
DSIT consultation: Proposal to update the Telecommunications Code of Practice 2022
Technologies and sources of threats have moved on since 2022 and the NCSC and Ofcom have pushed for a review to ensure the Code of Practice is fit for purpose and practical. We will be reviewing in the next few days and would recommend that clients take time to ensure they understand the proposed changes as, regardless of where we sit in the channel, potential cyber threats and how we protect ourselves, impacts us all. The closing date for views is 22nd October. ComReg Notice: European Accessibility Act
ComReg has published information on the obligations on Electronic Communications Service Providers under the European Accessibility Act (EAA).
The EAA regulations contain a number of new accessibility requirements which aim to improve the accessibility of Electronic Communications Services and to provide persons with disabilities with new consumer rights.
Although this regulation applies to clients based in Ireland the principles of accessibility are important to all providers. Full details can be found here: Comreg European Accessibility
Update: ComReg’s Code of Practice for Complaint Handling
ComReg has now reviewed the feedback on their consultation and have published their decision which is to keep to their proposals for how complaints need to be managed. For those clients operating in Ireland this should not come as a surprise and there is now a six-month transition to allow operators to move to the revised Code of Practice, full details can be found in Annex One.
Reminder: CLI checks
The CLI changes to block calls with a UK presentation number that originate overseas, are well settled by now. Clients with legitimate use cases to apply for exceptions have all been contacted and managed appropriately.
With the current Ofcom consultation considering how best to extending measures to include UK mobile CLI, it’s important that clients consider the impact on them and their customers and contact us to discuss any concerns.
Workshop Invitation: Number Portability – 9th October 2025 at 11:00
Back by popular demand! Whether you are new to porting or would just value a refresher we are again offering clients an opportunity to attend a 60-minute free online workshop with our porting expert Ashley Farr.
This workshop aims to help clients understand the porting process, explains how to use our Portal and follow our process, and what needs to happen when things don’t go to plan. So, if you have burning questions you’ve always wanted to ask, or have new team members on your porting desk then you’re very welcome to attend this workshop.
Please email support@magrathea-telecom.co.uk to reserve your space.
Events and Outings
August was again a quiet period in terms of events and outings for us, but things really start picking up again now that September is underway.
First, we have the CCUK awards on 25th September. It’s our 17th year of sponsoring the CCUK awards and as the early pioneers in the VoIP sector, this event is core to the origins of our business. As we wave a goodbye to TDM and Magrathea enters our 25th year of operating, we’re excited to celebrate and recognise both innovation and excellence in our industry.
We know these awards are hard won so we congratulate everyone who has been shortlisted and look forward to celebrating with the winners on the day. If you would like to join us and learn more about Comms Council UK, we have a couple of spare tickets so get in touch.
We are also looking forward to attending Connected Britain on the 24th September. Linda and Hayley, from our business development team, will be there. If you’re planning to attend please let us know so we can arrange a catch up – either drop us an email sales@magrathea-telecom.co.uk or connect via LinkedIn.
Coming up in October, we are once again looking forward to getting together with industry colleagues at the CCUK Women in Telecom event, in London on the 21st October.
Looking ahead to another event we sponsor – the ISPA Awards – taking place this year on 13th November and we have a couple of spaces at our table. If you would enjoy an evening out in the company of our team and other clients please get in touch.
What’s on our minds….
Whilst it feels like we’re wading through a plethora of consultations at the moment, we also like that it’s September – a time to welcome a new season. For Magrathea it means we’re already nearly through our 1st quarter of our business year and we’re making solid progress on our workstack.
However, there is so much we want to achieve this year so we are really excited to welcome a new member of the team, Adam, who is joining our development team next week. The development team is not directly client facing so not often mentioned in newsletters or postings however their work, particularly in the area of improving the tools our clients and team use daily, is critical to ensure that doing business with us as simple as possible.
If you’d like to see what we have planned for the whole of our year then clients can see our roadmap on the Guide. If you have any feedback on the roadmap, particularly, in terms of what’s most critical to you, then please get in touch.
As always here at Magrathea we appreciate your comments and feedback, if there is anything you would like to contact us about, please email info@magrathea-telecom.co.uk
Kind regards
Client Support, Magrathea
