On International Volunteers Day, we’re celebrating the people who give their time, skills and energy to make a difference – often quietly, consistently, and without expecting anything in return.
This year’s theme ‘Every Contribution Matters’ celebrates the power of collective action and acknowledges that every act of volunteering – no matter how big or how small – contributes to a stronger and more connected world. A reminder that every hour given strengthens the fabric of our communities and help shape the next generation.
In the telecoms industry, volunteering often happens behind the scenes, but its impact is felt across the whole sector. We see individuals offering their expertise to bodies such as Comms Council UK, NICC, FCS, UK regulators and specialist working groups – all with the shared goal of creating safer, more resilient and more innovative communications for everyone.
One brilliant example within our own team is Laura. Within the industry she contributes her time to important cross-sector groups that focus on telecoms fraud prevention and fighting against scam calls. Beyond work, she volunteers as a School Governor, helping create an environment where children can thrive. She also volunteers with a local sports club, where her involvement has grown over many years.
In her own words, she has “been involved with organising events at the club for around a decade” and recently took on new responsibility within the club’s committee. She adds that the person who previously held the role had been doing so for 45 years: “I’ve got rather big shoes to fill – she was a seriously great role model!”
Laura’s dedication reflects the very heart of what volunteering is about – giving time and expertise to help others to grow.
So, today, we want to say thank you to Laura and all the volunteers improving lives in their local communities. Thank you to those giving their professional skills to strengthen our sector.
And thank you to those who volunteer simply because it feels like the right thing to do. Your commitment helps build a better, more connected world – and we’re grateful for everything you do.
